I’ve always wanted to go to camp. Every September when I hear my friends recount their summer adventures at the various camps and retreats they went on in the weeks prior to school opening its door to imprison us once more, I must admit, I feel left out.
I had nothing to compare it to. Though I wouldn’t consider myself an “outdoors person”, the many stories of meeting new persons and unexpected discoveries seemed worth trading my mundane routine of summer jobs and far too many empty weekends of….. “So, what do you wanna do?”
Summer 2K18 was going to be the summer to remember for more reasons than one. This year I managed to convince both my parents to trust that I would come back in one piece from a retreat in Holywell with a friend’s church group.
The long car ride was worth the beautiful misty view that awaited us on the hill.
It took me longer than everyone else to get settled because of course the first time camper would over pack.

“I think I forgot the repellent.”
“Hey! We’re going for a hike. You coming?”
I certainly didn’t want to be the only one left unpacking. I stopped in my tracks and went along for the ride.
It was a muddy, soggy, misty, muddy, muddy…did I say muddy – muddy uphill trek with twists, turn and a tunnel I couldn’t get out of fast enough.
Speaking of the tunnel, I’m almost certain that someone pinched me but, that would have been pretty random. I only found out later that it was an insect bite when another camper announced “Ewww! What’s that?” in reference to my arm.
Nearing the end of our hike it was itching and I wanted to scratch it sooo… bad but I know my mother would advise me not to but I didn’t want to bring attention to myself.
Apart from the burning desire to scratch, I was okay. At least I thought I was. When I looked down on my arm, it was almost like an irritated heat rash but the bumps were a little too big to be a rash. This was surrounding the initial bite.
Thankfully, my camp counselor had DPH Allergy Cream. I was skeptical at first but it relieved the itching and pain from the insect bite.
I didn’t even know DPH had an allergy cream but it saved the day.
